TETFund Suspends Foreign Scholarship for Academic Staff

;

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced the suspension of its foreign scholarship component for academic staff, effective January 1, 2025.

In a press released by the Bayero University, Kano's press team, reveals that the decision, approved by the Board of Trustees, is in response to the escalating costs of training in foreign institutions and the high rate of abscondment among scholars.

According to a circular signed by the Executive Secretary, Arch. Sonny S. T. Echono, the suspension is meant to redirect resources towards local capacity building, reducing pressure on foreign exchange rates, and boosting investment in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The statement advised beneficiary institutions to prioritize local training implementation to ensure seamless continuity of academic development.

However, scholars already enrolled in foreign institutions will continue to receive sponsorship until the end of their intervention period. This provision ensures that existing commitments are honoured while paving the way for a more sustainable and locally focused approach to academic staff development.

By adopting this new policy, TETFund demonstrates its commitment to adapting to changing circumstances and prioritizing the growth and development of Nigeria's tertiary education sector.
