Background

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) will hire 3,927 new officers in 2025 to boost trade and support the country’s economic recovery. This decision was made during the agency’s 61st board meeting on December 18 at Customs House in Abuja.

The meeting followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presentation of the 2025 budget, called "A Budget of Restoration," to the National Assembly. The budget plans to spend ₦48 trillion, with ₦35 trillion expected in revenue. The NCS, which has already collected over ₦5 trillion by November 2024, is expected to play a key role in meeting these goals.

Finance Minister Olawale Edun praised the NCS for its strong performance and credited recent reforms by President Tinubu for the success. To improve efficiency, the board also approved promotions for top-performing staff.

To cover the remaining ₦13 trillion for the budget, the government plans to secure loans, grants, and other development support. Edun highlighted the NCS's efforts to fight smuggling and promote trade, stressing their importance for job creation and economic growth. He encouraged officers to stay focused on their role in reducing poverty and supporting national development.
