FG Launches Free AI Academy for Young Nigerians | How to Apply
The Nigerian Government launched an Artificial Intelligence Academy, offering free training to advance the country's position in the global digital landscape. The initiative was unveiled by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, at an event in Abuja, and represents a collaborative effort with the Commonwealth Secretariat and Intel Corporation.
The program, which is
entirely online and free of charge, targets students, young people, and
government workers. Chief Nnaji emphasized that this initiative represents an
opportunity to shape Nigeria's future digital development.
Enrollment for the AI Academy
begins December 19, 2024, with applications being accepted through January 30,
2025. The Minister highlighted the academy's role beyond just education,
describing it as a catalyst for transformation that will equip Nigerians with
essential AI capabilities.
Chief Nnaji stressed the strategic importance of this initiative, noting that as artificial intelligence continues to transform various sectors and create new economic opportunities globally, Nigeria aims to be at the forefront of this technological revolution rather than simply following trends.
Benefits of the AI Academy for Nigerians
The Minister said that
the programme would provide participants with access to self-paced courses on
AI fundamentals, ethics, tools and real-world applications.
He said that beyond
learning the AI Technology, it offered opportunities to compete for AI
ambassadorial roles and internships with Intel Corporation as well as ensuring
hands-on global experience.
Nnaji said that the role
of AI in nation-building could not be over emphasised as AI was no longer a
distant concept.
He described it as a
transformative tool that could drive progress in agriculture, healthcare,
education, security and many other sectors.
“By equipping Nigerians
with these skills, we are not just preparing individuals for jobs but creating
a pipeline of innovators, problem-solvers and leaders who will shape Nigeria’s
technological and economic destiny.
“Most importantly, AI will go a long way to help us develop innovative solutions for the unique challenges we face as a nation,” he said.

Background
The Tinubu administration
has prioritized artificial intelligence development, with the Ministry of
Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy leading these efforts under Dr.
Bosun Tijani's leadership. The government's vision is to establish Nigeria as
Africa's AI powerhouse and ensure the country capitalizes on the ongoing global
AI transformation.
A significant milestone
in this direction is the recent development of a National Artificial
Intelligence Strategy document. Currently under review by various Ministries,
Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), this document will serve as the blueprint for
coordinating Nigeria's AI initiatives once adopted.
To foster collaboration
and innovation, the government has established the AI Collective, a platform
designed to facilitate research, project development, hackathons, and
knowledge-sharing events that promote inclusive AI development across the
country.
In a groundbreaking move, Nigeria has introduced its own Large Language Model (LLM). This AI system will be trained to process five under-resourced languages along with Nigerian-accented English, enhancing the representation of local languages in AI development. Dr. Tijani notes that this initiative aims to expand the diversity of language datasets available for AI solutions.
