How to Apply for Google Fellowship Programme, 2024 | $30,000 Award
Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for the 2024 Google Fellowship programme. This fellowship programme directly supports graduate students to pursue their degrees, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor.

Google Fellowship Programme awards its fellows with $30,000 to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel.
The Google PhD Fellowship Programme is aimed at nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google.
The Fellowship Programme was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields.
Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourages people of diverse backgrounds to apply.

Google Fellowship Programme Requirements
Students and professionals are welcome to apply to the PhD Fellowship program.
For current PhD Students
- Applicants must be enrolled into a full-time PhD program at a university in Africa. Applicants who are currently in their first year of a part-time PhD program and transferring to full-time positions are also welcome to apply.
- Students should be early PhD students, i.e., should not have been into more than 1 year of their PhD. Applicants for the 2022 Fellowship must have started their programme on or after 1-Jan-2022.
- Students must remain enrolled in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
- Applicants must be pursuing a PhD in Computer Science or related areas.
- Google employees and family members of Google employees are not eligible
- Students who are already receiving another corporate fellowship are not eligible.
For current Undergraduate/Masters students and Professionals
- Grant of the fellowship to this category of applicants is contingent on them joining a full-time PhD programme at a university in Africa within the calendar year of the award.
- Student applicants must be full-time Undergraduate or Masters students enrolled at an African university. Professionals must be employed/affiliated with an organization registered in Africa.
- The Google Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for the full-time PhD program at an African university, in Computer Science or related areas, within the calendar year 2022, or the award shall be forfeited.
- Grant of the Google Fellowship does not mean admission to the PhD programme of a university. The awardee must also complete the PhD admission process of the respective institute/university where he/she wishes to register for PhD.
- Grant of the Google Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institute/university where the awardee registers for the PhD programme.
- Google employees and family members of Google employees are not eligible.
Benefits of Google Fellowship Programme
Students receive named Fellowships which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate.
In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor who we hope will become a valuable resource to the student.
Depending on the country, fellows will receive;
- Up to 3 year Fellowship
- Up to $50K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
- Google Research Mentor
Required Documents
Students will need the following documents in order to complete an application (in English only):
- Student applicant’s resume with links to website and publications (if available)
- Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor’s degree to date
- Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
- 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the applicant’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students)
- Short (one-page) resume of the student’s PhD program advisor
- Applicant’s essay response (350-word limit) to: What impact would receiving this scholarship have on your education?
- Describe any circumstances affecting your need for a scholarship and what educational goals this scholarship will enable you to accomplish.
All other required documents vary based on applicant’s country.
How to Apply for Google Fellowship Program, 2024
To apply for the Google Fellowship Program, interested and qualified applicants should;
- Visit https://research.google/outreach/phd-fellowship/ to apply
- Select your country (of study), and proceed to the fellowship
- Use the submission forms to submit your application and upload all required documents
- Students from Africa, America, Canada, Australia, and Europe cannot apply directly to the program; they must be nominated by an eligible university during the application period.
Application Deadline:
Submit by 11:59:59pm UTC-12 (AoE) May 8, 2024.
Notification of decisions will be announced via email in July 2024.
