CONUA to Sue Federal Government Over Withheld Salaries
The Congress of University Academics (CONUA), a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has said it is dragging the federal government before a law court over the withholding of their salaries.
A statement issued by the union's President, Secretary, and Publicity Secretary, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, Dr. Henry Oripeloye, and Dr. Ernest Nwoke, condemned the government for refusing to pay their salary arrears despite providing proof that its members did not partake in the 8-month strike.
The union explained that they had expected the backlog of salaries to be paid along with the November 2022 salary after writing the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Labour and Employment following the October 2022 half-pay. However, to their dismay, the government has refused to release their salaries.
“From the foregoing and as a law-abiding union that pledged to do things differently, we have resolved to seek legal redress of the illegal withholding of our legitimate salaries by taking the matter to court in consonance with the rights enshrined in our laws” the statement added.
