Igbinedion University, Okada was established in 1991
as the first private university in Nigeria. The institution is located in
Okada, headquarters of Ovia North-East Local Government Area (LGA), Edo State,
Nigeria. Igbinedion University was named after its founder, Sir Gabriel Osawaru
Igbinedion CFR – a billionaire, philanthropist and a prominent Benin Chief.
This renowned institution offers both undergraduate
and graduate programmes accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The undergraduate courses and programmes offered in Igbinedion University
are classified into seven (7) colleges – College of Arts and Social Sciences,
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi College of Business and Management Studies, Oba Erediauwa
College of Law, General Abdulsalami Abubakar College of Engineering, Oba Okunade
Sijuwade College of Health Sciences, College of Natural and Applied Sciences
and Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy. The university boasts of a student
enrollment of over 5000 students across the seven colleges.
Igbinedion University is the first Private University
in Sub-Saharan African to produce medical doctors and the first Private
University graduate to bag a first class at the highly competitive Nigeria Law
School in 2006.

Academic History of Igbenidion University’s Colleges
Igbinedion University began its academic programmes in
the1999/2000 academic session in five colleges – Arts and Social Sciences,
Business and Management Studies, Law, Health Sciences, and Applied Sciences.
The first set of students came into the university on Friday, 15th
Oct., 1999. IUO introduced and began its College of Engineering programmes in
the 2002/2003 academic session. The College of Pharmacy and Nursing began later
in the 2004/2005 academic session.
