Getting admission into a University in Nigeria could be very difficult, especially

Federal government owned universities because of their affordability, facilities, and many other benefits.

In this article, I carefully observed all the federal universities in Nigeria and filtered out those in which candidates are can get admission into without much competition.

Candidates should please note that to get admitted by any of the under listed universities, you must meet their requirements as labeled out in JAMB Brochure.

1.              Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB):

This is one of the newest specialized universities in the country located in Biu, Borno State owned by the Nigerian Army. It was established just last year and for the record, it does not have many applicants for now, as most people have not heard of it. Candidates should also know that this university is just a conventional university.

The university offers a wide range of courses ranging from Engineering, Sciences, Arts, Social sciences and many more. 2.              Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna (AFIT):

Located in Kaduna State, the Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna is a institution owned by the Nigerian Air Force. 4.              Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) Affiliated Institutions:

We all know too well getting admission into one of Nigeria’s first and prestigious Universities – Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is very difficult, as over 60,000 plus candidates fight for admission slot every year.

But very few people know that you must not attend lectures in ABU’s Kongo or Samaru Campuses both located in Zaria to be a student. 5.              Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA) Affiliated Institutions:

6.             University of Ibadan (UI) Affiliated Institutions:

UI is Nigeria’s premier university located in the ancient city of Ibadan, Nigeria. The university is one of the most applied universities in the country.

7.    Bayero University Kano (BUK) Affiliated Institutions:

Established in 1977, Bayero University located in Kano, Kano State, Nigeria is one of the most applied universities in the northern part of Nigeria after Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The university is affiliated to a couple numbers of institutions amongst are:

8.    University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Affiliated Institutions:

One of Nigeria’s finest universities, located in the eastern part of the country is the University of Maidugri (UNIMAID). No doubt like its counter parts above, the university has a quite number of applicants every year. And also affiliated to a some colleges, among which are:

9.             Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Affiliated Institutions

Located in Akwa, Anambra State, the university offers a wide range of courses and it’s also affiliated to other institutions such as:

10.       University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Affiliated Institutions:

Founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1955 and formally opened on 7 October 1960, UNN has three campuses – Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla – all located in Enugu State. It’s affiliated with a couple of institutions, amongst are:

11.  University of Jos (UNIJOS) Affiliated Institutions:

The University of Jos, located in state capital of Plateau State, with a total enrollment of 35,143 (2010) is one of choice to keep in mind when looking for admission. The institution itself has a lot of applicants.

12.  Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUSOK) Affiliated Institutions:

Founded in 1975, with a total enrolment of 24,047 (2011), UDUSOK is also another good choice to have in mind with choosing a federal university. The University is affiliated with some institutions also. Some are:

13.       Federal University, Lafia (FULafia):

Located in Lafia, Nasarawa State, FULafia was established in 2010 by the Goodluck Jonathan administration as one of the nine new federal universities established in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria.

The university does not currently have a lot of applicants compared to other federal universities, so we advised applicants to give it a try.

14.       Federal University, Wukari (FUWukari):

15.       Federal University, Kashere (FUKashere):

16.       Federal University, Gusau (FUGasau):

Also created during the Goodluck’s administration, FUGasau is located in Gasau, the state capital of Zamfara state. For FUGasau admission updates, CLICK HERE.

17.       Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK):

18.       Federal University Gashsua (FUGashua):

19.       Federal University Dutsinma (FUDutsinma):

20.       Federal University, Otuoke (FUOtuoke):

21.       Federal University, Dutse (FUDutse):

22. Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI):

The Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, Osun State is one of the new Universities established in 2021 by the Federal Government of Nigeria. 23. Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA): 

Federal University of Health Science, Azare (FUHSA) is a public university located at north eastern Nigeria. The university was established in 2021 with 760 pioneer student for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 merged academic sessions.

24. Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru (FUAZ):

25. Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO):

26. Federal University of Technology, Babura (FUTB):

The Federal University of Technology, Babura is owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The University’s campus is located in Babura, the headquarters of Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Northwestern Nigeria. The University’s host town offers the charm of a small agricultural town, with easy access to major metropolitan areas of Dutse, Kano, Bauchi, Maiduguri, and Kaduna. It also shares border with the neighbouring Niger Republic. 27. David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu (DUFUHS):

Formerly known as King David University of Medical Sciences (KDUMS), later renamed to David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State Nigeria. 28. Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education:

29. Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu:

In 2024 President Tinubu's administration converted the Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy, Enugu into the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu.  For more details, CLICK HERE.

30. Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo: 

The Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (ACEONDO) was converted into the Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. 31. Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Kwale, Delta State:

32. Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi, Adamawa State:

33. Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI)

Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI),  (formerly College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti) is an institution established to offer a broad-ranged opportunity for the education of the total man and imbue graduates with experiential vocational, and entrepreneurial skills needed for self-reliance.

34. Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA):

The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in June 2021. This university was one of two new Universities of Technology established and located in Akwa Ibom State in the South-South. For more details, CLICK HERE.
